Scrutinizing UNC’s Curriculum

This week’s Shaftesbury Society luncheon featured two members of the National Association of Scholars commenting on the results of their analysis of the general education requirements at University of North Carolina campuses. Stephen Balch and Gary Brasor told attendees the UNC curriculum is decidedly weak in a number of areas and at a number of institutions. For example, none of the 11 institutions studied require students to take American history. It is an option. Others have little or no requirements for languages, literature, or laboratory science. Instead, students are allowed to choose from myriad options, some of which are valid specialty classes, but don’t provide fundamental knowledge an educated person should acquire at a university.
