Landfills and Windfalls

posted on

It’s too bad Wake County didn’t keep in mind Michael Sanera‘s Spotlight piece
on solid waste markets that was released by the JLF in late
October.  If they had, they would have realized the power of
choice in saving money (or making money, as is the case in Camden)
on their trash.  Unfortunately for other Wake County residents,
the Raleigh City Council recently agreed to send all of its municipal
solid waste for the next 25 years to a landfill to be constructed near
Holly Springs.  With the deal, said Sanera in the Cary News,
the city’s residents get a per-tonnage discount that residents outside
the city will eventually end up subsidizing through higher costs.
