In Defense of Property Rights

posted on

A Spotlight paper published recently by Daren Bakst was referenced this week in a Raleigh News & Observer story about concerns over the erosion of private property rights. Monday’s piece about the potential impact of the Kelo vs. City of New London Supreme Court decision included comments from several Triangle-area officials and activists. It notes that current state law doesn’t permit localities to seize private property and give it to another private entity for redevelopment. That’s where Bakst’s paper comes in. The N&O explained that JLF has recommended a state constitutional amendment to ensure that North Carolinians’ property rights are protected from future decisions by legislators to expand the power of government.
