Get More of a Bad Thing

Colleges nationwide are accepting more applicants in an effort to provide higher education for all, while the quality of the education provided continues to decline. In his most recent report, “The Overselling of Higher Education,” George Leef discusses the consequences of this trend.  As Richard Vedder, distinguished Professor of Economics, Ohio University and author of Going Broke By Degree; Why College Costs Too Much, aptly points out in his blog in response to George’s report, the only way to change higher education for the better is to increase standards and decrease government subsidies.  If the continued use of remediation classes to raise the level of understanding of many college students is any indication, colleges don’t appear to be worried about standards.
