A recent Wilmington Star-News editorial touting the benefits of taxpayer-financed elections drew a sharp response this week from John Locke Foundation Legal and Regulatory Policy Analyst Daren Bakst. The Star-News printed Bakst’s letter Monday. Speaking of the editorial pages, the Coastland Times in Manteo recently referenced a John Locke Foundation report in discussing the need to shore up North Carolina’s ailing coastal insurance Beach Plan. (“[W]ithout Change, the Beach Plan could result
in higher insurance costs for nearly all North Carolina residents,
massive withdrawal of insurance companies from the North Carolina market, and fiscal turmoil throughout the state.” : The prediction
came from the usually conservative John Locke Foundation
as a special committee of General Assembly House and Senate members
held its first public meeting in Raleigh Tuesday on how to fix what
incoming state Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin has called a
“ticking time bomb.”
) Meanwhile, the Lenoir News-Topic picked up a recent column from JLF Vice President for Outreach Becki Gray. It urges people to “keep calm and carry on” regardless of election returns and financial turmoil.
