Mike Schietzelt joined the John Locke Foundation in 2019 as Criminal Justice Fellow. His primary focus is overcriminalization and criminal recodification. Mike holds a J.D. from Duke University School of Law and clerked for Chief Justice Mark Martin on the Supreme Court of North Carolina. At Duke, Mike served as a research editor on the Duke Law Journal. He is a member of the 2017 class of E.A. Morris Fellows.

Before attending law school, Mike played trumpet professionally, performing in amusement parks and on cruise ships before serving four years in the United States Marine Corps as a member of “The Commandant’s Own,” The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance from UNC-Greensboro.
