Problems and Solutions in North Carolina’s Public Records Law

  September 25, 2017, 12:00 PM-1:00 PM

John Locke Foundation, 200 W. Morgan Street, 2nd Floor, Raleigh, North Carolina 27601

North Carolina’s Public Records Act provides for public access to government records. In pursuit of a general policy of openness, the Act lays out a process for requesting and, when necessary, suing for access to public records. However, there are several areas in the Act and its interpreting case law that present problems and inconsistencies. These problem areas are barriers to both public access and government efficiency. This presentation will identify these problem areas and suggest a number of potential solutions.
