Nadine Strossen, Professor of Constitutional Law at New York Law School and the first woman national President of the American Civil Liberties Union, where she served from 1991 through 2008, will join us to give a presentation on her book, “HATE: Why We Should Resist It With Free Speech, Not Censorship.” In her book, she explains the importance of protecting the subcategory of “hate speech” and shows that laws restricting such speech do not effectively reduce the feared harms of “hate speech” and are often counterproductive. Strossen proposes that the best way to resist hate and promote equality is not censorship, but rather, vigorous “counterspeech”. HATE dispels misunderstandings plaguing our debates about “hate speech vs. free speech,” showing that the First Amendment approach promotes free speech and democracy, equality, and societal harmony.
